With barbecue being the most popular pastime in Australia, “Australian Barbie” is one of the best in the world. When we lived in the USA we used to go to Outback Steakhouse and Bugaboo Creek (the latter was closed), and now back in Israel I was glad to hear about Bar B Que. It was opened by Jason, an Australian who made ‘aliya’ to Israel six years ago. Bar B Que has been opened for six months already, serving kosher grilled and smoke meat lunch for reasonable prices.

We came to Bar B Que for the ‘end of the summer vacation’ meal with the children. Bar B Que is not a very big restaurant but has plenty of room to sit inside and outside. The décor is warm and simple with a lot of wood and a green chalkboard displaying the menu.

There’s also an Australian-Hebrew Aussie slang dictionary…

The menu is meat and poultry based – chicken, hamburgers, sandwiches and wraps, and more ‘serious’ courses such as steaks and special plates with pulled beef, Assado. There are also salads and some vegans. The sides include fries, sweet potatoes, grilled vegetables, rice and mashed potatoes, and salads.
At lunch, dining is ‘self service’, you order at the counter and get a buzzer that rings when your food is ready for pickup. The service is fast, adapted to the busy business crowd.

Our meal

My daughter ordered a burger with fries, she enjoyed it.

My son ordered the Schnizel, served with two sides. He got a very big crispy chicken that was very well done, with rice dotted with carrots, and a vegetables salad (he complained about the dressing, but we found it tasty).

My partner ate Smoked Pulled Beef Sandwich.  It was served in a burger bun with mustard garlic aioli, crispy fried onions, lettuce, tomato, and red onions. This turned out to be a very good choice. He loved every bite!

I ate one of the special meals called Bondi (which is in the main photo of this article) – smoked Assado, Brisket, and wings in barbecue sauce, served with Crostini, coleslaw, panzanella salad, with chimichurri, served with a drink.  I asked to replace the wings and got Sinta instead. This ‘tray’ is fantastic! First, it is so nicely served that you can eat it with your eyes! Second, it is like a tasting meal, you don’t have to choose and you can have it all! And lastly – everything is very soft, well done and yummy with a variety of tastes and flavors, a real treat!!! If you ask me, when you come here, take one of the specials, you won’t regret it!

Here are also a few close ups.

With the meal we had some of the sides – mashed potatoes, grilled vegetables, and roasted sweet potatoes. These small sweet potatoes were so sweet and soft. Mashed potatoes are always suspect in a kosher restaurant, but here they added fried onions that upgraded it to a delicacy. The best side here in my opinion is the grilled vegetables that included carrots, peppers, eggplant, zucchini and onions perfectly seasoned!

We all agreed that this restaurant is great! The meat is excellent, the sides tasty, the atmosphere is informal and the prices are fair.
Comment? The fries were regular, and we would have liked to see also steak fries. We felt the lack of desserts, but there is an ice cream shop around the corner.
Bar B Que is very popular and is packed during lunchtime. Now it is growing and as of this week it will be opened for dinner with a new menu (including starters, elegant entrees, wines and desserts!). It is suitable for the whole family and for fine evening dining. They already importing selected Australian artifacts and decorations, they will reorganize the restaurant for dinner and change the layout and setting of the tables. We tasted one of the wines that they plan to serve here – Magma 2015 of Bazelet HaGolan Winery. A very good blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, aged unfiltered for 20 months.

We really enjoyed the restaurant and the food here and highly recommend it!
